In December 2015, Hideo Kojima left Konami - he worked in it since 1986 and created a lot of amazing games. True, the developer did not plan to tie up with the world of video games and, together with the staff of Kojima Productions, decided to create games on their own. But it was not possible to start production immediately, because even having Kojima world-wide fame for a long time he could not find financing for his project. Investors were afraid to give money to a studio that does not have its own releases behind it, because this is a risk and you can lose everything.
Fortunately, Sony Computer Entertainment took over - the company helped Kojima Productions stand on its own as an independent studio. And after some time Kojima officially announced that the studio is working on the Death Stranding project, which will be released exclusively on the PlayStation 4 (plans eventually changed). Moreover, the famous Japanese developer said that he would create a new genre of video games and his project would surprise gamers around the world. Looking ahead, I can say that Kojima did not lie - the game is unique.
No wonder he was nicknamed GeniusWith fantasy, Hideo Kojima is very good - not everyone can come up with such a cool story. Of course, I will not begin to tell all the details and key points, because literally one spoiler can ruin the mood for those who plan to play the game on their own. At the beginning of the story, we are told about a global cataclysm that has radically changed life on the planet. Now it rains everywhere that speed up time for all living things, and the world of the dead suddenly became part of the world of the living. Rains can age a person in a couple of drops, and Creatures drag the living into the world of the dead.
The survivors, and there were very few of them, decided to escape from rains and critters in underground bunkers and large cities. Separate settlements can be connected exclusively by couriers - these are brave guys who can feel or even see Creatures. Couriers carry out dangerous orders, delivering the necessary supplies, food or medicine to remote corners of the virtual world. For one such fearless guy, we will play - the main character is Sam Bridges and only he, according to the scriptwriters, is able to revive the old world. To do this, he needs to connect the east coast of America with the western chain of nodes.
This, in fact, is the basis of the storyline - Sam travels from bunker to bunker, receives tasks in the terminals and expands the network by connecting nodes. The final destination is the west coast, where we will need to connect the extreme point and save a very important person for Sam named Amelia. True, this is only the skeleton of the storyline - in fact, there are hundreds of times more details, and the overall picture will amaze you with its versatility and ideas that Kojima could put into the story. This game, like a good detective, is revealed in small details, which in the end give answers to all questions. Or almost everything.
Give a helping hand and they will help you tooIt is worth remembering one important detail - Death Stranding is a single player game in which there is no multiplayer or cooperative. However, you will interact with other players in it even more than in online games. It's all about mutual assistance, which the game is saturated to the bone. During the passage of the next task, you, for example, can put up a ladder and easily climb a high mountain, where you would get about five minutes without additional equipment. Now you can move on, and your ladder will go to the worlds of other players and help them during the passage of the same task.

Similarly, all the player’s buildings work. You can throw a rope from a steep cliff and help everyone who later follows this path to go downstairs faster. You can put up a bridge and connect the two banks, set up a charging station for equipment and vehicles, build an entire observation tower to explore the surroundings. All this moves into the worlds of other gamers and helps them travel, and the buildings of other players will help you. Throughout the game, I found installed stairs, ropes, charging stations and other little things that made life easier. And of course, I also wanted to help others by building useful buildings.

Moreover, the idea of mutual assistance extends to the loads of other players. Throughout the map you will find abandoned containers that gamers for some reason could not deliver to their destination. You are free to help them and deliver the goods to the indicated point, or you can drop the container into the mailbox and then anyone can pick up the goods and deliver it themselves. And if each player makes a little effort, each cargo will be delivered, and any difficult section of the route will be ready for travel. This is the miracle of Death Stranding. The game teaches people to help each other and makes it as simple and understandable as possible.
Open world from a different angleThe map in this game is huge, but the main highlight is that you really will feel its scale. Each task involves transporting cargo on Sam's back to the most remote points in the virtual world, where we will need to get on foot. And this is not a level road along which you can simply run and enjoy life, but a dangerous path with cliffs, steep cliffs, forests, gorges, mountains, rivers and other elements of the landscape. All this must be overcome carefully and without haste - any drop leads to damage to the cargo, and the customer really does not like it.
With a couple of hundred kilograms behind you better not to fall
To successfully deliver the cargo, the player must first spend some time with the map, study the landscape, see how best to pass the map sections, how to avoid the MUL camp, how not to get stuck in front of a hefty mountain or gorge. After you have laid the route, it is worth taking care of a sufficient number of stairs and ropes. Only then can you hit the road. First, the preparatory process puts you in a stupor, but already at the fifth hour of the game you will begin to understand the features of the landscape, you will notice difficult areas and go around them, even learn to count the equipment that you need on the way.
Walk four kilometers one way? No problem!
During delivery, you should pay attention to the surface on which Sam is walking - in other games, we are used to running and not looking underfoot. Here you can step on a stone, lose your balance and fly head over heels along the slope, simultaneously losing cargo. Death Stranding is the first game in which you will literally feel the surface, every pebble, hole, puddle. From the vibrations of the gamepad, you can understand how comfortable the hero is to move along the path you have chosen, and if you see that the load on Sam’s back is now falling sideways, then you should stop and choose a more suitable route. Here, as in life, the short cut is not always the best.
Total: 9/10On the Internet, with the release of the first gameplay video, Death Stranding was dubbed the “walking simulator”, and for some reason, only the mechanism of urination was noted in the story trailer. This is the most superficial assessment from gamers who prefer action, shooting, fights, and the quality of the game is estimated solely by the schedule and time it takes to complete the plot. Kojima created the game for those who like to think, know how to enjoy the beauties of the world and fall in love with the most insignificant details that most people will not pay attention to.
It is for this reason that Death Stranding, without any doubt, can be safely called a game not for everyone. The plot of the project will often break the brain, showing incredible pictures and showing characters from a variety of angles, and no game can boast of such an unusual setting. To understand the ideas that Kojima laid down in the plot, you need to be able to read between the lines, read and ponder the dialogues, learn to do good and resist evil. If you succeed, the game will give a sea of emotions, sensations and experiences that you will remember for a lifetime. If it doesn’t work out, just enjoy the gorgeous scenery and acting.
And after Death Stranding it’s quite hard to play other games - everything seems somehow flat and superficial. As if after the films of Martin Scorsese or Christopher Nolan, he sat down to watch the next part of The Avengers.
