Usually routers are sold one at a time. Who needs the second - will buy more in the right amount. But ASUS decided to release a set of two powerful AX92Us to build a single coverage area using AiMesh technology. Let's see how good the pair is in practice.

Packaging, equipment, appearance
Both routers come in a beautiful medium-sized cardboard box.
Minimum equipment: a pair of power supplies, one power cord, a set of paper instructions.
AX92U are designed in the standard “angular” style for ASUS. The case material is black plastic, there are at least protruding elements, the antennas are in a “marching” state.
Most of the body area is dotted with ventilation holes required for natural convection. It can also be seen that the router can be mounted on a vertical surface with a pair of screws.
Most connectors focus on one of the ends: five RJ45, a power socket. The Power and Reset buttons are also displayed here.
On the other end are two USB, one of the second and third versions, for connecting drives and peripherals. Nearby is a WPS button for quick connection to a wireless network.
On the third side, activity indicators are concentrated in the amount of six pieces. Most of them relate to the operation of a wireless network. The color of the glow is white, the brightness is moderate, in the dark it does not irritate the eye.
Internal organizationTwo halves of the body are held by four screws.
Inside there is one printed circuit board, which together with the heat sinks occupies a large part of the body volume.
Three radiators, all aluminum. Two are in direct contact with microcircuits on the front of the board through thermal rubber, the third (installed from the bottom) additionally removes heat through pads and printed conductors.
The basis of the electronic filling is the dual-core Broadcom BCM4906 ARM processor, equipped with 512 MB of RAM and 256 MB of flash memory. Wireless performance is provided by the BCM4352 and BCM43684 controllers.
Antennas are mounted on the top cover of the housing. Four outside, two inside.
Web interfaceCompared to previously released models, the external part of the “shell” of the router has not undergone any significant changes. The initial setup can be done automatically, but you can also set parameters manually.
At the end of the initial setup, the interface familiar to the owners of ASUS routers is displayed: menu items on the left, brief configuration information in the center.
Basic network settings are collected in the “Local Area Network” menu.
WAN settings are collected in the Internet menu. It is possible to connect a dual WAN with transparent switching. Here you can "forward" the ports.
Wi-Fi settings are collected in the “Wireless Network” menu. There are many points and subparagraphs; work with the RADIUS server is supported.
Guest Wi-Fi settings are rarely used, which is good - for all its convenience, there are some security problems. This is due not to ASUS flaws, but to the connection setup algorithm itself. Based on personal experience of use, I would recommend disabling this technology of “accelerated” connection wherever possible and / or undesirable appearance of intruders inside the network.
Security settings are collected in the "Ai Protection" section. In this section, you can configure the blocking of attacks, malicious resources, and master the monitoring of children's activity on the Internet.
Firewall control is displayed separately in the Firewall menu, although the essence is very similar to Ai Protection.
Setting up VPN connections is displayed in the section of the same name. Both client connection and server creation are supported: PPTP, OpenVPN and IPsec.
In the list of useful “applications” for optimizing the bandwidth of QoS and GameBoost, and you can track usage statistics in the “Traffic Analyzer” section.
To work with cloud services and organize your own cloud storage, the AiCloud section is designed.
When integrating devices into the "smart home" and practice in remote control of the router, the Alexa & IFTTT section will be useful.
Additional services for devices and drives connected to USB sockets are collected in the USB application menu. You can connect a printer, share a drive for access via SAMBA and FTP, use a 3G / 4G modem to connect to the Internet.
Router operation mode, interface operation parameters, external access, firmware update and other “system” settings are set in the “Administration” item.
In the “Network Utilities” section, a basic set of programs for assessing the availability of a particular site on the Internet and building a route is compiled. Here you can configure Smart Connect.
Separately, it should be said about setting up the joint work of two routers. The procedure is as simple as connecting to the Internet - activating the function on the "main" router, selecting the second as the MESH node, combining it into the system. It is impossible to enter the web interface on the “slave” router, since it is controlled from the “main” one, and, in fact, becomes the second in a bunch. Communication between routers is via Wi-Fi, there is no need to pull a network cable.
Test resultsThe speed characteristics of the router were evaluated using a Lenovo E480 laptop with Wi-Fi 802.11ac module and Iperf program. The server part of the application was launched on a client connected to the “main” router via Ethernet. Routers were located in two opposite parts of a large multi-room building with brick walls at a distance of 12 meters, there was no direct visibility. The distance (indicated on the graph) was estimated from the “main” router.
The work of the second AX92U is clearly visible - speeds at maximum distance, where the adapter built into the laptop "did not finish" to the "main" router, jumped sharply after turning on the MESH bundle of the two. It is noteworthy that at a five-meter distance communication failures were sometimes observed when the routers constantly “transferred” the laptop from one access point to another.
Another example of using a MESH system is a wireless bridge. The graph below is obtained when connecting the laptop to the “slave” AX92U via gigabit Ethernet. Here the numbers in meters are the distance between the “leading” and “slave” routers.
It can be seen that at even a considerable distance the speed is high. Of course, Ethernet does not reach Ethernet, but it is possible to transfer large amounts of data without problems and long expectations.
Working with drives via USB of the third version via SAMBA or FTP is adequate in speed - write 38 MB / s, read 101 MB / s.
Feedback after two weeks of use
The ASUS AX6100 RT-AX92U 2 Pack is a good network starter kit for a large private home or mid-sized office with dozens of other employees. The routers are easy to configure and use, support the latest 802.11ax standard, look presentable, easily configured, and thanks to a powerful SoC processor, they can take on some additional responsibilities for processing traffic or providing access to data. The only negative is the price. It is still unknown, but in foreign online stores they give the system for $ 370. It can be assumed that in Russia they will ask for a set from 24 to 27 thousand rubles, which from the point of view of an ordinary user is prohibitively expensive. And for a business solution or a large family, it is quite comparable with other solutions of this kind.Pros:
