The current market for SLR cameras is such that the budget segment is a leader in terms of sales. Therefore, the largest camera manufacturers are now trying to equip the camera with a ton of functions that should attract a buyer. It is about such a representative of entry-level cameras that will be discussed.

The camera got into the test in its native packaging. The box design is standard for almost all manufacturers, there is nothing special about it. But it pleased the way the camera and lens were packaged. A lot, a lot of bubble wrap. Its abundance cannot but rejoice, as this is a guarantee that nothing will happen during transportation with the camera. For SLR cameras, this factor is important.
In addition to the camera and the complete AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55 mm lens, the box, as expected, included a charger, a large number of various documentation, a warranty card, a shoulder strap and a battery with protective packaging.
The charger, into which the battery is inserted, by the way, does not have wires, but is directly connected to the outlet. Less wires are better. This is convenient when traveling, as it eliminates unnecessary confusion.
AppearanceAt first glance, it is clear that Nikon tried to make its camera as compact as possible. And she did it. Small body, light weight, a lens that does not take up much space in the bag. A good option if you always and everywhere need a camera, but such a smartphone is not enough for you. Has it affected usability? A moot point.
The camera body does not look flimsy, the plastic is durable and there can be no talk of backlashes and creaks. All controls are made efficiently, and in order to press any button, you will have to make some effort, so accidental clicks during shooting cannot occur.
The external part of the mount is made of metal, which adds to the strength of the structure. After switching, for example, from the Minolta system for the first time, you will want to “twist” the lens clockwise. But not with Nikon. Here the lens is attached by scrolling counterclockwise. A matter of habit, nothing more.
Above the mount there is a native flash, a button responsible for controlling the built-in flash and one function, the purpose of which can be set by yourself, as well as a button that unlocks the lens mount to the camera. Her position is standard and does not raise any questions.
If you look at the camera from above, you will see a standard connector for an external flash, a camera power ring, a shutter button, a built-in speaker, and a shooting mode switching wheel. Three buttons just below the shutter button migrated straight from the previous version of the camera.
From the display side, too, nothing has changed much. Large and pleasant for a budget camera, although it has an impressive air gap, it conveys colors naturally and right on this display in “traveling” conditions you can evaluate the resulting pictures. Buttons on the left side of the screen are additional control buttons, to the right, navigation keys were in their usual place.
On the end surfaces of the camera are connectors for connecting via USB and HDMI and a slot for a memory card. Bottom - tripod mount with standard thread and battery compartment.
The convenience of useHas compactness affected convenience? Rather yes than no. The center of gravity is not balanced, and even with the whale lens attached, the camera will roll forward onto the lens. It would seem that this is not so important, but when shooting on the street it makes itself felt. In addition to the fact that the grip itself is not very reliable and convenient, the camera will strive to fall out of hand. This is especially felt when shooting with one hand. Agree, it is not always necessary for everyone to see that you are trying to take something or to photograph someone.
To all this is added a not very logical arrangement of the adjustment wheel of the selected parameter, for example, shutter speed, or ISO values, with a small camera size. With one hand, almost nothing can be done. When buying a Nikon D3400, it’s better to add an extra $ 50 and buy a third-party battery pack that will increase the camera’s footprint and give you extra time.
InterfaceA person familiar with Nikon cameras will not find anything new for himself in the camera’s graphical interface. The standard appearance of various settings screens, an almost intuitive interface.
For beginners, a special Guide mode is provided that allows you to configure the main aspects of shooting from a simple screen, on which you can find some photography tips and help to familiarize yourself with the capabilities of the D3400. No histograms or anything else that can scare a novice photographer.
Shooting and camera features
During testing, the camera showed a very good side. Using a silent focusing lens allows you to almost instantly focus on the desired subject with almost no false auto focus. Added to this, Nikon's standard focus area illumination with a special LED allows you to achieve the same result when there is not enough light entering the image sensor.
The camera’s autofocus works well even when imperceptibly shooting an object on the go.
As for the level of operating sensitivity values, you should not rely on the fact that you can shoot with ISO above 3200 without noise. A high amount of noise is produced by the representative of the budget segment in Nikon D3400. Why such an ISO 25400 camera? Most likely a marketing ploy.
Maximum aperture (3.5) and short shutter speed (1/1600) with enough light. In the full-sized image, the appearance of a large amount of color noise and grain for a daytime photograph is visible.
In order to almost always get really good shots, it is better to spend some time and deal with terms such as shutter speed, aperture and photosensitivity and how they correlate with each other. Well, of course, start shooting right away in RAW format. To be more precise, here the digital negative has the NEF extension. Yes, photos will “weigh” approximately 20 MB, but at the stage of editing photos you can almost always achieve the desired result.
Digital negatives help save even the most underexposed shot. The example above shows that “twisting” the exposure to the maximum will not kill the part and will hardly affect the quality of detail. With JPEG, this is not possible.
You can also edit NEF images on the camera itself, since the software allows the user to do this. There is even a multiple exposure effect in which image processing algorithms combine several frames into one to obtain a more effective picture.
During the daytime scenes, there were no complaints about this camera model. In automatic mode, the camera selects quite adequate parameters. The contrast of the images is good, there is no sharping on small details, the color rendition is almost always natural. A good result for the camera from the budget segment.
Below are pictures with automatic selection of shutter speed and aperture with a gradation of ISO values from 100 to 25400.
A stock lens with a standard focal length of 18-55 has acceptable characteristics. There is no particular distortion at the edges of the photos. Their presence can be seen, for example, when shooting architectural structures. But in order to minimize them or almost reduce them to zero, an option is provided in the settings that allows the processor to automatically process the image to eliminate these defects.
The presence of such a lens with noiseless focusing allows you to shoot videos without fear that the built-in microphone will record the extraneous sounds of the mechanisms. But still, videography will not work with this camera. The updated model has lost any audio connectors. Now it is not possible to connect an external microphone. What caused the rejection of the 3.5 mm connector is unknown.
Also, the Nikon D3400 eliminated the possibility of raising the glass to clean the sensor. For a beginner, this, of course, will not be a reason not to buy this camera, but it can alert the user a little more experienced. You can see the original photo files by downloading this archive .
This camera model got the opportunity to synchronize with your device on Android or iOS through a proprietary application from Nikon - SnapBridge. The connection is via a Bluetooth connection and allows you to upload pictures from your camera directly to your smartphone, from where you can already publish a photo on some social network.
Such problems that we encountered while testing Nikon KeyMission 360 did not arise. Synchronization is fast, it is possible to download images even when the camera is turned off.
The standard 1230 mAh EN-EL14a battery showed itself only on the good side. When shooting almost always exclusively in RAW, I had to charge the battery only two times. And then, for reliability.
The manufacturer claims that the battery charge Nikon D3400 is enough to "snap" 1200 frames and only then be discharged. Not bad for a budget camera
The Nikon D3400 is definitely a good option if you need a compact SLR camera with interchangeable lenses that you can’t afford to buy. The small size that allows the camera to accommodate even in a very large bag, light weight, pleasant image quality and adequate price. At the same time in the "DSLR" there is the possibility of synchronization with your mobile device. All this makes the updated model of the popular budget camera the first contender for the purchase of devices in this class.
