: Tell us a little about yourself, a kind of mini profile. Where do you live, what do you live with, what do you work for.tequilaCat
: I live in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, I work, as you might expect, as a programmer :) in a small company. I have been working there for a long time (since 1997), a good position and interesting tasks. I live and work and get pleasure and work, but at the same time I don’t forget about my family or talking with friends - this is important.T
: When did the idea to write a reader arise? And what caused this - the lack of a normal product in this category? Or just a desire to write for yourself?C
: Year - 2003. Well, then there were no products at all to choose. There was ReadManiac, but it worked only for Siemens, I found out about it after my project “took off”.
How did it all start? I have been working with the Java language since 1998, and when Java-enabled phones appeared, it immediately became interesting how these phones should be programmed. In 2003 I purchased a new phone - Motorola T720, it was immediately color and with Java, very different from everything that came before it. I started several projects at once, it was fun - the phone, and on it - my own programs (sic!), How to :)
I and other owners discussed the new phone features on the ixbt forum, and someone suggested writing a book reader. I put aside my projections and quickly, on my knee, blinded the demo. The people liked it, and it became a key factor that motivates me. When there is a positive response, it is very inspiring - and recognition of you as a professional, and pluses pour in karma :)
Gradually, the discussion of the project grew beyond the framework of the forum thread, I made the site popularly, then I moved to another free hosting, and in the end, one grateful user set up the domain.
For all the time I received a lot of thanks from around the world, some donations and some useful services.T
: How old is the project? How much time is spent on it?C
: Counting from the summer of 2003 - already 7 full years.
I spend less time than I would like. When you work at home, the family only knows you from the back :) and this is wrong, so you have to find a balance.T
: Have you received any commercial offers regarding the program?C
: Oh yes - there are many more than I can digest. Without going into details, I prefer to receive income at the place of my main job, and write an e-book reader for the soul. But several commercial projects made. There is no regular income.T
: What are your plans for the future? Are there any other projects?C
: So far, the main plan is to overpower the new version of the reader. There are a lot of ideas for her, they need to be tied together and decent implemented.
There are projects - there is no time. My first projects would find their user if they were brought to mind - crosswords, tetris with different algorithms. Nothing ingenious, but if done qualitatively, they will kill a lot of time in the metro / lines, which is required of such programs.T
: What do you think about Android, Windows Phone, iOS? Can you expect products from you for these platforms?C
: iPhone - Apple made a good product. The development of hardware and software in the same hands, strict adherence to the praised Apple ergonomics - as a result, the iPhone "took off." According to reviews - a very nice thing. In addition, Apple set the direction for the development of telephone operating systems - an app store + services. Now Apple is “cutting” the upper price segment, there are few (although good) models and they are expensive - not for everyone.
Android is a slightly different approach. The software from Google is convenient, and the development of hardware was given to manufacturers, as a result there are more models and prices for any wallet. I have Android, I advise it to everyone.
Windows Phone came out later than competitors, formed under their influence. IMHO Android has occupied the niche of mobile Windows, now MS is forced to catch up, and not the fact that it will work out - MS already had several failed attempts, not everything can be solved with money, a viable concept is needed. The question is how much they will take into account the success of competitors and whether they can convince consumers to return to them (by presenting interesting models / services).
On the iPhone and WM, I simply don’t have enough, there are already excellent readers there, and I would have to catch them from scratch. The version for Android is more real, because it’s easier to start, much can be reused - programs for Android are also written in Java. In addition, I have HTC Wildfire, I do not put other people's readers in order to have an incentive for development for Android. It is clear so far that this will be a porting of ideology - technically, a lot will have to be written anew, re-implementing the strong features of my program, for example, setting everything up.T
: What about the Treshbox? How do you like it?C
: Trashbox.ru - solid. A large amount of content, clear navigation, nice to use - I liked it. It makes a very solid impression.T
: What is your device (or maybe several?)?C
: The main phone for six months now is HTC Wildfire (Android 2.2).T
: Does it make sense to write on regular phones?C
: I’ll venture to suggest that the market for j2me phones will dry up, in the end it will be kept only by cheap all-in-ones - “phones to talk”, “Chinese iPhones” and cheap devices with smartphone hardware (such as LG kp500 and Samsung Corby). Everything else will take the cheap and middle segment of androids and more expensive devices on all major smartphone OS.
Since I am writing a reader for users, and there are plenty of tea houses and cheap sensors, I plan to release a stable version for J2me and buddy the version for Android from it. But here you already have to look the market in the eye, the Android version will continue to develop, and in j2me I will correct the errors. Writing for regular phones is more difficult than writing for Android - Google did a great job to ease the work of the programmer, and manufacturers of j2me phones make it harder. My opinion is not mine, but the correct one - signing applications (for accessing files, GPS, the Internet, etc.) killed phone java.T
: Tell us more about the new version of the reader?C
: The new version is itchy in the fingers, but you need to pack up and find a fair amount of time, at least go on vacation :) The plans include new ergonomics, improved support for touch screens, support for all encodings and Utf-8, improved work with color schemes, reading HTML and EPUB formats from a memory card, support for archives, library functions on the PC and in the phone itself, text formatting + hyperlinks. Most of this is implemented “on a slipway”, it remains to bind and clean, something needs to be done from scratch. In general, work and work. It just so happened that version 3 is unfinished, but, I hope, not Duke Newham forever.
I’m not going to make advances, since everything depends on free time, and life is so unpredictable.T
: Well, of course, the most important thing is to tell us about your nickname and, accordingly, the name of the program.C
: Yes, everything is simple - the nickname corresponds to me 100%. I know and love tequila. Amazing drink, convivial, liquid gold. It is consumed easily, it is also digested :) There are 3 cats now, there were 5, alas - their age is shorter. Of the five, three are selected. My wife and I are scammers, well, there is self-identification;) That's why I am tequilacat, the tequila cat.
