The SteelSeries brand focuses exclusively on gaming peripherals: headsets, mice, rugs, keyboards, gamepads and related accessories. Narrow specialization, as a rule, allows you to devote a lot of time to each new product, pay attention to the smallest details. Whether SteelSeries complies with this statement, we learn from the example of the Apex M750 keyboard.
The design of the Apex M750 is characterized by smooth transitions that are not typical for gaming peripherals. Chrome edged inserts at the ends emphasize the overall softness of the lines. The front panel is painted in black aluminum. The quality of the materials is excellent, the assembly is neat.
There is nothing superfluous in front, only the SteelSeries logo, service indicators and 104 keys. There are already four indicators: Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and gamer mode.
Note that to the right of the space is the second Windows, not the context menu. The feature is corrected by reassigning the key through the proprietary utility Engine 3. Moreover, the action can be performed both by pressing and releasing the button. Also, software can record macros, their number is limited by the number of reassignable keys.
And only FN is not reassigned, on which, instead of the usual designation, the brand logo is engraved. Unusual feature - highlighting the available combinations in orange at the touch of a button. Among them are brightness control and backlight modes, multimedia and volume control. But there is a flaw: the Windows key is not highlighted, although in combination with FN it activates the game mode.
Mechanical keyboard based on linear switches SteelSeries QX2 , created in the likeness of Cherry MX Red. The key travel to actuation is 2 mm, full - 4 mm. There is no tactile feedback, the click is deaf, the required effort is 45 grams. Long keys are equipped with stabilizing inserts that allow you to work equally well, regardless of the place of pressing. The only miscalculation is the loud sound of a space, not typical for deaf linear switches.
The backlight is standard for such switches, RGB with uneven glow of the Cyrillic alphabet and special characters. The brightness levels are already 20 with the possibility of smooth adjustment through the utility.
The backlight impressed with the possibilities of customization. 12 modes are available, for most of which the direction and speed of the effect is adjusted. Reactive animation can be applied to any mode: ripples, waves, ripples and others. The keyboard is compatible with PrismSync
, a utility for synchronizing backlighting between SteelSeries devices.
To change the height of the tilt, removable rubber legs are used. This solution is more stable than folding legs.
A fixed cable 2 meters long is protected by an ordinary rubber braid, although competitors use a more beautiful and practical fabric. The bend protection, on the contrary, is massive and of high quality; the cable can hardly bend. A small bonus is a Velcro clamp.
SteelSeries Apex M750 is an interesting representative of the segment and a great offer for fans of the brand. For convenience, there are no questions, the keyboard is kept at the same level with other mechanical classmates. We were pleased with the original features: highlighting FN combinations, smooth adjustment of the backlight brightness and removable rubber legs. A key advantage was thoughtful software with a lot of settings and the ability to reassign all the keys. At the same time, the problem of uneven illumination remained unresolved, and the rubber sheath of the cable is doubtful.
