Starting October 17th, Windows 10 users around the world receive their second annual update. Named as the Fall Creators Update (codenamed “Redstone 3”), the latest version of the desktop platform continues the concept of developing people's creativity and is aimed primarily at creating content. Of course, according to tradition, the list of innovations does not end there - for ordinary users, the Fall Creators Update also has many interesting new features.
In a detailed review of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, we figure out what Microsoft has been working on since spring, what are the improvements in the OS, how are things with the new Fluent Design design, and what opportunities for creativity are now open.
With the Fall Creators Update, Microsoft is gradually translating Windows 10 into a new design language - Fluent Design. It was presented in May at the annual Build 2017 conference and showed how the operating system will be transformed in the coming years.
At the heart of Fluent Design is a series of layers that together turn Windows 10 into a modern, stylish and convenient product - light (Light), depth (Depth), motion (Motion), materials (Material) and scale (Scale). At the moment, in Fall Creators Update, not even a large part of them is implemented, so there is no talk of a complete redesign. For example, now instead of the usual translucency in applications, the Start menu and the Notification Center, a new graphic effect of blurring “acrylic” is used.
According to Microsoft, the company plans to switch to Fluent Design in stages, so the Fall Creators Update is a breakdown of the pen. The design of Windows 10 is expected to be fully updated with the release of the next major update (Redstone 4) in early 2018.
Contacts in the taskbar
The new quick contact management system through the Taskbar, known as “My People”, was supposed to appear in the Creators Update in April. For unknown reasons, Microsoft was not able to implement it on time, so it was postponed until the Fall Creators Update.
People in the Taskbar is a new way of communication, with which Windows 10 users will get quick access to their contacts. With just one click, you can interact with your friends, colleagues, family and share content with them. The function allows you to pin up to 3 contacts in the taskbar and uses services such as Skype and Outlook Mail. To transfer content, you can simply drag and drop files or images onto the contact icon without having to open separate applications.
The new function of pinning people to the taskbar is really very convenient and will be useful to users of the Microsoft ecosystem. However, without the support of third-party applications, it is practically meaningless. Skype and Outlook Mail are the only services My People currently supports in the Fall Creators Update. If Twitter or Facebook, one of the most popular social networks in the world, does not appear, then the function will certainly remain uninteresting for users. There is definitely a prospect, so it will be very sad.
Windows Mixed Reality
Originally, the Mixed Reality Portal application (Windows Mixed Reality) appeared in Creators Update, but then it was not ready for use without the appropriate equipment. With the Fall Creators Update, Microsoft launched the first mixed reality helmets from Acer, Asus, HP, Dell, Lenovo and Samsung.
Now computers with Windows 10 can work in mixed reality mode - you just need to connect an accessory and run a special application. The technology allows you to view 3D models from the Remix 3D community in VR mode and video in 360 degree mode, as well as use universal Windows applications with elements of mixed reality. It is worth noting that for the stable operation of the function, a productive computer at the level of Surface Book 2
To use mixed reality in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, the Mixed Reality Portal and Mixed Reality Viewer applications are preinstalled.
Story Remix Editor
After upgrading to the Fall Creators Update, Windows 10 introduces a new photo and video editor, Story Remix. It is part of the standard universal application "Photos" in the operating system, so there is no need to make additional installations.
Without much effort, Story Remix creates interesting albums and videos by applying filters, text, unusual animations, music and special effects. This is not a full-fledged video editor like Apple iMovie, but it’s quite a basic tool with a minimum set of functions - for simple content. Some of the special effects are available only to subscribers of the Office 365 Office suite. However, regular users can access most of the effects introduced in Story Remix.
It is noteworthy that Story Remix works automatically. You do not need to save changes when creating an album or video - the editor will do it for you. When everything is ready, you can send your work to friends. At the same time, Story Remix suggests how to do this in the most suitable way for you:
- File size S : very fast to download, best suited for emails and small screens.
- File size M : best for transferring over the Internet.
- File size L : It takes a very long time to load, best suited for large screens.
Updated Microsoft Edge
Microsoft's proprietary browser for Windows 10 has become faster and more functional. The Fall Creators Update for Edge has several new features: pinning bookmarks of selected sites to the taskbar, support for full-screen viewing mode and an updated PDF viewer with the ability to add annotations when reading files.
Less significant innovations include an updated design with Fluent Design elements, the ability to transfer cookies from Chrome to Edge, edit URLs in the favorites list, change permissions for websites, now the built-in Microsoft Translator and, of course, a noticeable increase in productivity.
One of the inconspicuous, but loudly lit on the network new features of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update has become an integrated system of protection against cheats for games. The innovation was called TruePlay and has been tested in the operating system under the Windows Insider program since July 2017.
TruePlay is similar to the Valve antivirus software (VAC), which the popular game developer uses on Steam. The system works in the background, tracking certain changes in data in games (automatic aiming, viewing through walls, wrapping game currency, unusual buying content, etc.). When cheats are detected, TruePlay displays a warning to the user asking them to disable unsolvable software, and a report is sent to the developers with the relevant information.
In the game settings of Windows 10, TruePlay is disabled by default, but Microsoft is starting to make the API available to developers. Developers will be able to use TruePlay in their games in the Microsoft Store, so at the moment this restriction is only associated with games for the platform of universal Windows applications (UWP).
It is possible that subsequently TruePlay will move from Windows 10 to the Xbox One platform. But if it will only concern UWP games, then for fans of using cheats this is not a threat. There are simply no worthwhile games for real gamers in the Microsoft Store.
In the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, traditionally there are also minor innovations - something that is less noticeable to the user when using the OS. Some of them have been waiting for a long time.
- New design of the Notification Center with interactive features.
- Windows Sonic technology for enhanced sound and headphones.
- Access on-premises and cloud files on demand in OneDrive.
- Graphics Scheduler Task Scheduler (GPU) displaying the current load and the amount of video memory used.
- Synchronization of Android-smartphone or iPhone (notifications, messages, websites and the function of continuing to work on the PC) through the Cortana application.
- New emoticons and dialog box for Emoji.
- Updated touch and pen tools.
- Currency converter in the "Calculator" application.
- PIN and password recovery from the lock screen.
- Beta version of Eye Control.
- The new application "Getting help" to solve problems and send feedback.
