A few months ago, the Chinese studio Drodo Studio released a very popular custom Auto Chess card for Dota 2. However, it didn’t work and it was soon announced by the custom authors a mobile counterpart, and then a full-fledged PC game, which goes to the Epic Games Store. Valve decided that it was impossible to lose an audience and pretty quickly presented their project called Dota Underlords. Now only the owners of Battle Pass can try the new product, but in a week the game will be available to everyone on a PC, Android and iOS. We decided to tell you about the basic elements of gameplay, so that you understand how to fight and win.
Rules of the game
There is a “Play” button in the main menu, by clicking on which a menu for selecting a mode appears. We’ll talk about them a little later, but now we propose choosing a single battle mode and a minimum level of difficulty. This is the best way to get acquainted with the features of the project. Immediately after that, you will begin to load the level and the playing field will appear in the form of a chessboard (8 × 8). It is worth noting that you can only use your half of the field, that is, 4 × 8, while the second half is fully provided to the opponents. Now is the time to buy the first hero and send him into battle.
A menu with the purchase of characters will appear before each round so that you can take new characters for gold coins. Heroes in the list appear randomly, so it is impossible to guess the appearance of the desired character. But, you have the function of replacing the received characters - for gold you can shuffle the deck and get new heroes available for purchase. This function should be used closer to the middle of the game, when gold is no longer an incredibly valuable resource, but in the initial stages it is better to buy those characters that immediately appear in the deck.
You can immediately send the purchased character to the battlefield. There is an important point - the number of characters that can simultaneously be on the chessboard depends on your level. In this regard, Valve fellows - the developers indicate near the level icon the amount of gold that needs to be given in order to prematurely upgrade. It is also worth interacting with this function only if you have already reached the limit of heroes and there is free gold. For example, if the limit allows you to use only two heroes, and you have already set them, you can safely spend gold and increase the level to get an additional combat unit.
The first three rounds in Dota Underlords are the easiest, since you will fight exclusively with creeps (non-player monster characters). For the victory over each wave of artificial intelligence, you get the opportunity to choose one from three random objects and equip it with your hero. Only from the fourth wave will you fight with real players (in our case, with bots of an easy level). For the victory over the opponent you are awarded bonus points, and health points are taken from the defeated enemy. The player's task is to choose the right strategy and defeat enemies by killing their pieces. Who remains in the lead is the winner.
ItemsFor winning the first three rounds and further during the game, you will receive various kinds of items in your inventory that you can later equip on your characters. In this regard, Dota Underlords turned out to be quite convenient - a gamer always chooses the equipment item that he needs from several proposed options. In Auto Chess Mobile, for example, items drop out randomly and situations often happen when you have warriors on a chessboard and items fall for magicians. There is no such problem in the new game, because you have the right to choose. The resulting item can be equipped with a hero and remove it if necessary.
Each item of equipment has its own characteristics, which are worth reading before using the item. For example, if your character uses magic spells, then giving him an item to increase physical damage does not make sense. There are also global artifacts that act on all characters at once and have special advantages. If, for example, you managed to get the Aegis of the Immortal, then you can afford two defeats without losing health points. There are a lot of such items, and if used properly, they can turn the tide of battle.
The equipment upgrade system, of course, also exists. All the items you receive are simple elements of something more. That is, you can take several basic "ingredients" and collect from them some advanced item that gives much more characteristics, useful bonuses or even special skills. Of course, you will be able to collect full items closer to the late stage of the game, but you should not forget about this either. A character with a full item on the attack will do much more damage than a similar character without it.
Choosing HeroesIt is worth clarifying that all the characters in the game have not only the main characteristics (the number of health points, damage, armor, etc.), but also two of the most important parameters - race and class. You can find out information about the characteristics and parameters of the hero both during the game, by clicking on the character, or in a separate menu. The player needs to focus not only on damage, but also on bonuses that are inherent in a particular race and class. For example, if you put three characters of the “Bully” race on the battlefield, then random allies get +15 to armor and +10 to health regeneration. This is a serious bonus, allowing you to win in the early stages of the game.
However, if you put six characters of the “Bully” race on the battlefield, then all your allies will receive +15 to armor and +10 to health regeneration. At a late stage, when you have the maximum number of heroes on the board, this bonus can at any time turn the battle in your direction. And there are a lot of such bonuses - it is worth exploring all the features of classes and races in the main menu in order to roughly understand which characters should be put together and which ones can be immediately thrown away. The information obtained allows us to defeat those opponents who pay attention exclusively to the character’s rank and its attack indicators.
Valve developers should be praised for a fairly convenient and understandable information menu - even a player who has never heard of Dota 2 can literally master all the characters in about ten minutes. Moreover, you can view descriptions of all the items presented in the game and study bonuses from alliances so that during the battle you can correctly select heroes by race and class. Of course, you can read the same information during the battle, but there you are limited in time, and in the main menu you can rush to think about what composition you would like to see near the end of the match.
ModesAt the moment, the game has only two modes - multiplayer and single player. Online you will fight against real people and this is much more interesting, because every gamer has his own strategy, tactics and tricks. But, for beginners it is strongly recommended that at least five fights be held with bots. There are four difficulty levels, so you can practice a bit, try how the mechanics and functions of the interface work, and then go fight with real people. Although, the last level of AI complexity can not even be touched - it is much easier to defeat people than these bots.
Valve also promises in the near future to add a training mode that will allow beginners to learn all the gameplay features in an understandable form for them. The mode is currently locked. And, of course, very soon in the multiplayer mode will appear rating selection of games. That is, for victories and defeats, your overall rating will change and you will get into battle with gamers who are at about your skill level.
Can fightIf you have already played the Auto Chess mod for Dota 2 or the mobile version of Dota Auto Chess Mobile, then you do not even need to learn the Dota Underlords rules - these projects are very similar. Experienced players only need to re-read the descriptions of objects and several new characters in order to feel comfortable and confident on the battlefield. Fortunately, beginners will also not have any problems, since there is nothing complicated in the gameplay. You need to spend ten minutes studying the characters and their parameters, then go to a single player game and train with light bots. A couple of matches and the basic rules you will learn.
After that, it’s worth re-reading the characteristics of classes and races, taking the time to subjects and trying your hand already with bots of medium difficulty. Play a few matches, and there you can already go online and gain experience with real players. See you on the battlefield!
