The past year 2018 was remembered for experiments with framelessness. First of all, cutouts in the upper part of the display are widespread. Broad, narrow, drop-shaped, however, the solution is a compromise, an alternative is needed. One of them is a return to the sliders that were popular about 15 years ago. Only at that time the keyboard was hiding, and now the front cameras and the earpiece. The new Honor Magic 2 is the first slider in the company's lineup. How convenient is it and are there any prospects for this format? We will tell in today's review.Specifications:

The design of Honor Magic 2 develops a corporate identity: glass with a gradient, a glossy metal frame, a vertical triple camera. We got a red version, the most spectacular of all. The color turns purple below and orange at the edges - a beautiful contrast.
The main cameras stick out a few millimeters and are shifted from the center to the left, which is why it is inconvenient to use a smartphone lying on the table. A possible salvation is a case, which will also solve the problem of soiling of the mirror surface. It is not so easy to wipe the back panel from prints, despite the oleophobic coating. The main thing is that the glass turned out to be wear-resistant and after a month of active use only two scratches a millimeter each appeared. An excellent result, as other glass smartphones lose their presentable appearance much faster.
Cutout displays are the main compromise of modern smartphones, concealing usable area. Magic 2 has nothing of the kind, the frames are as thin as possible, the corners are rounded in exactly the same way as the body. Above the display is a thin cutout for the earpiece and compactly placed sensors. The only thing left to work on is the lower frame, which is much thicker than the rest, due to the display loop. The display itself is represented by an AMOLED matrix with a diagonal of 6.39 inches and an aspect ratio of 19.5 to 9. Image quality is on par with the latest flagships. Color mode and temperature are adjusted.
The cameras and the speaker are hidden under the front panel, which is completely shifted down in the manner of sliders from the beginning of the zero. The gesture is understandable and, since the smartphone fits perfectly in the hand, it is performed without fear of dropping the device. The mechanism is smooth and elastic, the closer does not allow to open the mechanism by half. Be that as it may, it is almost impossible to guarantee the equally refined work of a moving part after years. Also in this format it is more difficult to provide moisture protection. As a result, the form factor will not become widespread, which only increases the uniqueness of Magic 2. Moreover, another more simple alternative to the monobrow is developing in parallel - a small O-shaped slot under the front camera.
Arrangement of elements at the ends without surprises. Bottom: multimedia speaker, USB Type-C and main microphone. Above: an additional microphone and an infrared transmitter - for the presence of which you can only praise. Sim tray for two nanoSIM on the left and all keys on the right. There is no jack for headphones; instead, the adapter contains a Type-C adapter - there is no place for an analog jack in a futuristic smartphone.
Otherwise, Magic 2 resembles other smartphones of the company. In particular, the triple module of the main camera consists of a 16 MP main camera with an f / 1.8 aperture, 24 MP black and white with an f / 1.8 aperture, and 16 MP wide-angle with an f / 2.2 aperture. It can be said that a wide-angle lens from the flagship Mate 20 Pro was
added to the Honor 10
camera. In the afternoon, honed software plays along with good optics, so there is no doubt about the result.
In the evening, and even more so at night, the lack of optical stabilization affects us, literally, we have to freeze, otherwise a loss of sharpness.
For unknown reasons, HDR is activated only manually, there is no automatic mode - an unfortunate miscalculation.
The smartphone does not have a separate telephoto lens, despite this, a hybrid double zoom is available without loss of quality. The effect is achieved due to the black-and-white module with a higher resolution of 24 megapixels.
Wide-angle lens makes it possible to take unusual frames and group photos. Magic 2 has a good 16-megapixel wide, equivalent to 17 mm or 0.6x. In difficult conditions, there is a loss of sharpness at the edges of the frame, the rest is beauty.
The smartphone records video in resolutions up to 4K with 30 frames per second or 1080P with 60 frames. Our sample video is recorded at 1080P 30 FPS. Despite the difficult conditions, the smartphone did not lose focus, the exposure also did not jump. During shooting, you can smoothly switch between lenses. But the key advantage is the sound recording quality. Other smartphones record concerts with overloads when, like the Magic 2, stereo sound is clean and realistic.
The front camera is also triple, the main 16 megapixel module with f / 2.0 aperture is complemented by two 2-megapixel depth sensors. In the list of software features: AI-based retouching, simulation of different lighting and portrait mode. The practical use of additional sensors has not been established, since closing them does not affect the quality of portrait selfies.
My favorite feature of the front camera is the imitation of lighting, which looks pretty original.
To switch from the main camera to the front camera and vice versa, it is necessary to open and close the slider accordingly - conveniently.

Despite the hidden front camera, Magic 2 supports face recognition. The unlocking process is different from ordinary smartphones, instead of pressing the power button, you need to open the slider. It may seem that this takes much more time, but after getting used to the difference is leveled. The scan itself is quick and error-free, but only in good conditions.
At dusk and at night it is better to use the fingerprint scanner integrated in the display. In Magic 2, speed and accuracy were slightly improved relative to the Mate 20 Pro. It takes a little less than a second to unlock, that is, the sub-screen scanner is very close to the classics.
Since Magic 2 will not be sold in Russia, a smartphone with preliminary software based on Android 9 Pie and the proprietary shell Magic UI 2.0 fell into our hands. The appearance and functionality of the system is the same as that of other Honor smartphones. Software works flawlessly, quickly and smoothly.
Of the unpleasant, I can only note navigational gestures. On the company's smartphones, to return to the previous screen, you need to move away from the left or right edges. As a result, playing in 2048, the “back” gesture occasionally triggers, the same situation in other applications where you need to pull out the side menu or brush something off.
The flagship Kirin 980, built using the 7-nm process technology, was taken as the hardware platform. That is, the company adheres to the previously chosen tactics, when after the debut in the Mate lineup, the remaining flagship and sub-flagship smartphones receive the senior chip. In terms of performance, there are no questions to the Kirin 980, the chip has an excellent margin for several years ahead, work tasks and any games do not cause difficulties.
From the smartphone to the smartphone based on Kirin chips, the same problem stretches with separate volume levels when connecting Bluetooth headphones. It would seem a trifle, but it is inconvenient. Otherwise, there are no questions to the Bluetooth 5.0 module, the codec support is complete: SBC, AAC, aptX and LDAC.
Other wireless interfaces also work fine, in particular, NFC supports all possible protocols except Mifare. There are no problems with reading Troika transport cards.
In our autonomy test, the smartphone lasted 11 hours and 26 minutes. Given the 3400 mAh battery, the result is decent. In everyday use, Magic 2 holds for a full day, and 20 percent remains on the next, only 4-5 hours of display operation.Trashbox.ru battery test results:

Thanks to the fast charging of SuperCharge 2.0 at 40 watts, you don’t have to worry about night charging. It is enough to spend 30-40 minutes in the morning to replenish 70-80 percent of the battery.
The Magic line is designed for experimental smartphones that showcase the company's vision. A couple of years ago, the first generation marked a complete transition to glass cases with sloping shapes and the development of artificial intelligence. The second generation surprises with an unusual form factor, but the slider is unlikely to be developed in the current version. First of all, due to low technological effectiveness. The second reason is the availability of a more reasonable alternative, namely an O-shaped slot under the camera. The above arguments do not beg the fact that Magic 2 is a good smartphone for lovers of all the unusual. It is very easy to stand out from the crowd with it, and it's not just a slider, the gradient design itself looks attractive.
- Frameless design without cutout.
- Unusual form factor.
- Pleasant appearance.
- Good glass front and rear.
- Convenient, for a large smartphone, ergonomics.
- Powerful Kirin 980 hardware platform.
- Great mics.
- Infrared port for household appliances.
May not like:
- The lack of optical stabilization.
- Separate volume levels when working with wireless headphones.
- Lack of support for memory cards.
- The main camera passes in difficult conditions.
- Using the telephone lying on the table is inconvenient.
- Lack of automatic HDR.
But it is worth considering that unusual things are not subject to estimates.
Final rating: 7 out of 10.
