Good evening to users, readers and old-timers of the best mobile portal Treshbox.ru. Microsoft has released an updated March build of Windows 10 Technical Preview with build number 10049. One of the main innovations in it is the appearance of the latest rethought and modern browser Project Spartan. However, unlike other mobile portals, which were mostly viewed only by the Microsoft web browser introduced in January of this year, I present to you a full overview of the second March update of the operating system. Read all nishtyaki under the cat.
Attention! This review is irrelevant! A full review of the final version of Windows 10 is available at this link
Let's start, perhaps, with the most important thing - the first inclusion in the new assembly of Windows 10 Technical Preview of the truly long-awaited new browser from Microsoft under the code name "Project Spartan"
. The new product will replace Internet Explorer, although the "download program" will still remain in the operating system and continue to serve corporate customers and the business segment. At the moment, that is, in assembly 10049, Project Spartan is incomplete - quite a lot of errors, crashes and all kinds of unstable operation of the application. Despite this, the browser is a great addition to Windows 10 due to its design.
At the same time, we recognize that it is important for some of our corporate clients to have the support they need and they can continue to use Internet Explorer when and where they need it. That's why we will continue to develop and support it - Internet Explorer will become the default web browser for the business segment. It will be compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 for all customers and will continue to offer a platform that is great for enterprise web applications - Microsoft.
The design of the latest browser from the software giant has finally begun to match modern fashion: Project Spartan is made in the most minimalistic and flat design. In the user interface there are traditional navigation buttons “Back” (step back), “Forward” (return to a step forward) and “Refresh” (refresh the page). Further, in a separate panel, there are buttons for opening the notes function, writing a review and the proprietary "ellipse" - there are all the application settings. All interface elements are large enough for a normal browser - you won’t get used to it right away, but this is an optimization, first of all, for devices with touch screens, that is, tablet computers.
As was shown at the January 10 presentation of Windows 10: The Next Chapter, Project Spartan comes with Cortana's voice assistant
integration — an innovative feature of Microsoft’s new web browser. Cortana in Project Spartan is currently only in English, like Cortana itself, but the integration of artificial intelligence in the browser makes the Internet better, easier and more convenient - for example, if you want to check the current weather, you can simply type “Weather” in address bar and Cortana will provide you with a summary of this. Cortana can also show you detailed information about nearby places, news, flight information, exchange rates, and many other things. In general, the functionality is similar to Google Chrome - in the browser from Google, programmed informative cards are displayed in the search, and in Project Spartan this happens in real time.
Another useful feature of Cortana in Project Spartan is its ability to quickly find something by word or phrase. For example, if you type the word “Microsoft”, right-click and click “Ask Cortana”, then it will present you with detailed information about Microsoft in the right pane. Moreover, this panel displays almost complete information, including the date of foundation, CEO, description and some other things, but in a sufficiently short format for faster perception of the most important thing about the search.
Along with the integration of the Cortana Project, Spartan begins its march with some other features. The new browser allows you to annotate web pages and share them using the OneNote service or by email - you can highlight something on the open tab by clicking a special button, add a comment, and subsequently share your creation with friends or family. This is definitely a nice and useful feature that will probably come in handy when using Project Spartan, but at the moment it is not very conveniently implemented on desktop computers.
Project Spartan also supports reading mode. If you are viewing an article on the Internet, the “Reading Mode” or “Reading Mode” icon will light up directly in the address bar and thus notify you of the availability of opening a web page in the built-in reader - by clicking the article will be displayed in the most simplified form without the presence of unnecessary content, including advertisements. It is worth noting that the user has options for setting the theme and font size for this mode - this add-on can also be attributed to one of the useful ones without any doubt. Convenient and simple - why not?
Of course, there are also disadvantages of the Technical Preview Project Spartan, which debuted in the updated March assembly of Windows 10 - at the moment it’s not sufficiently developed, but this moment is forgiving, because both the operating system and the browser are currently only at the stage of open testing. From what Project Spartan does not have in one of the first browser builds is the download manager and the history of visited sites. Naturally, you can make downloads and delete history, but you can’t see specific downloads or visited web pages yet. The last thing that cannot be said - Project Spartan in its current form does not yet have improved development tools - basically the same solutions are used as those implemented in Internet Explorer 11, although the browser is already quite fast and you can sit on the Treshbox without any problems. reading it even in read mode.
Microsoft said that the first public release of Project Spartan does not have many features that will be included in the final version of the product. From the well-known: now there is only one search engine in the browser - of course, Bing, but then other popular search engines will appear, and also in the future Project Spartan will receive extension support similarly to its main competitors Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. To summarize, so to speak, about Project Spartan as it is now, you can read the full list of available functionality for quick and comfortable reading below.
- Cortana Technology : Cortana in Project Spartan is a personal assistant that helps you browse the web and find out the information you need easier and easier. Cortana offers help at the right time — based on what you know about you and what you might want to do at one time or another. The technology runs in the background, but provides additional information only when necessary, and also provides a more simple and efficient use of a familiar browser. In Windows 10 build number 10049, Cortana is available only in English, but wider availability will appear later.
- Web Note : You can capture the webpage you are viewing and fill it with your thoughts. Each user typically uses a web browser to share questions, answers, thoughts, information and comments with friends and colleagues. Now with new features in the form of Web Note, you can also show this - the function allows you to draw and write notes directly on the page. This is a very easy way to share something in an unusual format via email or using some popular social network. Notes can also be saved in the future, in OneNote.
- Reading View : Project Spartan implements a reading mode in which excess content is removed from pages. Page design can be selected through the browser settings. The default ivory background is set, but it can be changed to white, gray or black. The color and size of the text can also be changed. In addition, pages opened in Reading View mode can be saved in PDF format.
- Latest web engine : Microsoft’s new browser uses the latest page rendering engine. The whole Project Spartan is built on the basis of a single idea - “The Web just works.” The new rendering engine allows Project Spartan to work faster, more securely and more reliably with the World Wide Web. So far this is only the first change under the hood of the new browser, but in the future Microsoft will use completely new development tools different from Internet Explorer and Project Spartan will become a completely new, modern, beautiful, fast, simple and safe browser for Windows 10.
New multimedia applications
Almost immediately after the release of the updated March assembly of Windows 10 Technical Preview, Microsoft introduced
new multimedia applications Music and Video for the future Windows 10. They will replace similar services that are now available in the current version of Windows under the popular brand of Xbox. In fact, Microsoft had to do this before - users did not understand the reason for the involvement of the Xbox brand for multimedia applications. In general, yes, they are related to the entertainment sector, but the Xbox is a game brand, so here the views of users and companies diverged somewhat. In the latest build of Windows 10, new items became available, and they can already be installed and, of course, used.
I will not be able to tell a lot about the new Music and Video applications, which are designed to listen to music content and watch movies and videos, respectively, because what they are presented by Microsoft now, I still do not recommend using them. In my case, for example, authorization didn’t want to work at all, and in both applications, and I couldn’t pave the way for the Video service where all my TV shows and films are located - clicking on the “+” every time I fell into a trap: the application just crashed, crashed, or stopped working. In general, both new services are made in the style of Windows 10 and light colors and are universal - the interface using the new hamburger menu clearly demonstrates this.
Music (not mine)
Updated everyday appsAs you know, in Windows 10, oddly enough, such applications as the alarm clock, clock, stopwatch and timer will only appear. They will be packaged in a single application called “Alarm Clock and Clock”. In the new assembly of Windows 10 under the number 10049, this application received a new interface and a light gray color scheme. Thus, now it is fully consistent with that in the mobile version of the operating system. Also, the Calculator and Voice Recording received exactly the same cosmetic update - now they all have a light interface in gray tones. Most likely, this is the first stage of modernization, because all of their icons are also gray - in the case of the universal Application Store, this means beta status, so we can assume that these are not the final versions of new products.

Other improvements and fixes
Project Spartan includes integrated Adobe Flash - you can enable or disable it easily using a special toggle in your browser settings.
Traditionally, I have selected the smallest improvements in a separate category. In this category I will not bore you with a large amount of text, but simply use the list creation function and in a convenient format I will show and tell you about minor improvements. So:
- Now you can open photos from the Photos application when you open a dialog box.
In the Settings application, the Personalization icon for the operating system has been updated.
Network settings (Internet access) in the taskbar received a new user interface.
