Despite the similarity of SteelSeries Arctis headsets, you need to look for such a diverse product line. The assortment has a wide variety of headsets that seem the same only at first glance, but in reality have many external and functional differences. Today, one of the older models on the test, the Arctis 9X wireless headset, sharpened under the Xbox One.
Cup shapes are a common feature of brand headsets. Only body materials differ. For Arctis 9X, as for the older model, we have prepared the best performance: the basis is high-quality matte plastic, the central inserts are made of pleasant silicone. The SteelSeries logo is applied with special paint without texture. In the shade, the inscription remains black and completely invisible, in the light the shade changes to bright gray. This is a small but stylish piece.
The headband is a solid metal plate with a silicone insert on the inside. Responsible for landing elastic fabric, passed through the headband. The green color goes well with the Xbox. The original mount differs from Arctis 3 in
appearance, but in fact it is the same convenient and practical.
Adjustment with a single Velcro, the range is limited by its width.
The cup suspension, rotating in two planes, and the metal base of the headband provide good clamping and, as a result, sufficient passive insulation. The fabric ear cushions are the same as those of other SteelSeries Arctis headsets: comfortable, ventilated and comfortable to wear.
But wireless technology has affected ergonomics for the worse. Due to the increased weight, Arctis 9X tries to fly off the head, it is worth actively turning your head, or tilting your neck forward. The manufacturer does not disclose the exact weight of the headphones, but, according to the sensations, their weight is not less than 600 grams.
As noted above, Arctis 9X is designed specifically for the Xbox One and connects to the console as a controller via Xbox Connect. The same technology works with computers on Windows, but only with the help of a special receiver, which is sold separately. For other devices there is regular Bluetooth 4.1 with SBC codec. Another connection method is a 3.5 mm AUX, but there is no suitable cable in the kit.
The battery is charged via an outdated microUSB. The manufacturer claims 20 hours of operation. The figure is fair: at medium volume when connecting via Bluetooth, the headset worked a little longer than 22-25 hours.
The headset supports simultaneous audio output from two devices. Thus, you can simultaneously connect to the console and smartphone to listen to music or answer calls without being distracted from the game. The mutual volume of the sources is controlled by an analog wheel on the back of the left cup.
The rest of the controls are on the right: analog volume wheel, analog microphone toggle switch, pairing and power buttons. Since the volume control is analog, the overall level of the Xbox does not change on Windows or on a smartphone.
Muting the microphone is accompanied by a red indicator, which is clearly visible by side vision. The stretch mount retains its shape, allowing you to fine-tune the distance to your mouth. The recording quality is superior to the younger Arctis headsets: moderately loud, without interference and extraneous sounds from breathing.
Like the design, the sound of SteelSeries Arctis headsets is very similar to each other. The emphasis is shifted in favor of explosive low frequencies, the middle is littered, high only emphasize the big picture. Detailing via Bluetooth with a modest SBC codec is not impressive: it creates a strong impression that the speakers are capable of more. The situation is corrected by the wire, through AUX the sound is saturated with pleasant details.
This review has a reason for calling. After all, with all its advantages of a wireless connection, the Arctis 9X case turned out to be excessively heavy, up to an accidental fall from the head. If the user is ready to put up with this, they are waiting for him: the corporate style and sound of SteelSeries Arctis, excellent quality materials and workmanship. And, of course, parallel wireless connection to the Xbox One and any other device for background listening to music.
