If you follow the market for gaming innovations, then you know that the coolest releases come out in October-November, plus a couple of good-quality projects are released in the spring. In March, for example, Far Cry 5 turned out to be the most striking release, although it had no particular competitors, and in April there were no AAA products at all, with rare exceptions. On the other hand, in the absence of competition from large publishers, small independent studios decided to give up their strength to release their games. Most of these games will not be interesting to you, but what we added to this article should remain in your memory.
Naturally, against the backdrop of God of War, all projects fade. The developers spent a lot of time and energy on how to restart the series like loyal fans, and indeed all the players, and they succeeded. We have not had time to play it yet, but from the trailers it became clear that the restart was successful, and the new Kratos can not only fight. Plus, a couple of good indie products, one Japanese masterpiece. In general, I’ll play what, although I regretted that I called February “modest” in terms of bright releases.
Extinction (PC, PS4, Xbox One)People lived calmly and happily, grew vegetables and built huge castles to protect themselves from enemies. However, those creatures that came to destroy them are not afraid of high walls and stone structures, and indeed there is little to frighten them with. Hefty orcs, no less massive in height than a skyscraper, came to say hello to the little people and eat a hundred or two of our relatives to gain strength and set off to conquer new lands. The plot is interesting, especially when you realize that it seems like there is no place to wait for help.
Then he goes on stage - the last guard. Stylishly shaved, with a ponytail on his head, in strange clothes, and a small sword in his hands. Of course, size is not the main thing, but when you plan to fight with King Kong green, you need to have something more serious in the arsenal. But this sword is not simple - it can increase in size at the time of impact and chop off the limbs of the enemies. Even so massive. You will need to attack the enemy, kill small assistants, and then demolish the head of the most important bully.
An important feature - the limbs of the orc grow back after a while. You chopped off his leg, the enemy fell, but if you don’t finish it, then the leg grows back and here the green monster goes to crush and break again. Thanks to this element, plus a decent difference in the size of the character and his opponents, the battle process is very, very active, there is literally no time to breathe out and think about life.
- wild action during fights;
- large open world;
- dozens of varieties of orcs;
- enemies are twenty times larger than our hero;
May not like:
- a lot of blood and meat;
- winning a fight is pretty hard.
Extinction arrives April 10 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (PS4)
Of course, you can’t call Yakuza 6: The Song of Life a fresh game, because it was released in December 2016. That's just SEGA
, the project development company, decided to first release the continuation of the saga only in Japan. Localization in English, the game received only now. For fans of the series this is a gorgeous gift - you can again plunge into the gangster romance of the Japanese mafia, get a lot of pleasure from the plot and fascinating story.
The creators of the sixth part tried to make the plot so exciting that even without playing the previous part, it was interesting enough for you. If you are a devoted fan of Yakuza, then you will meet already familiar characters, if not, you will get a lot of pleasure from the unique story. The videos for the game were shot very high quality, literally everyone conveys the atmosphere and tells a little more information about this virtual world. As in the previous parts of the franchise, the game tells us a full-fledged adult story that you want to follow.
Completed Yakuza 6 completely in the Japanese style, and I'm not only about locations, music and everything else. The attention to detail is so close that sometimes you even wonder why it was so complicated. A lot of mini-games, minor quests, opportunities and activities, a small open world with lively characters, stories and your life. A great continuation of the game series.
- continuation of a cool story;
- You can create your own clan;
- fights have become even more active;
- dozens of secondary tasks;
- open world.
May not like:
- waited too long for localization;
- sometimes too much pathos.
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is released April 17 on PS4.
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia (PC)
There are very few good strategies in the gaming market - ten years ago it was the best genre for developers, but now everyone has hit the lootboxes and multiplayer shooters. The developers of Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia together with SEGA will try to correct the situation. They promise us a gorgeous story and storyline about England from the time of 878. The British are fighting the Vikings, trying to drive them off the island, plus they are fighting among themselves, hoping to capture more territory.
It is worth noting that the Creative Assembly development studio is located in England
, so they really like to create a game about their own country of that time. The developers of the project promise us the maximum reliability of all historical events and facts, the authenticity of the soldiers, their uniforms and weapons. Of course, an ideal repetition of the whole story will not work, since the player himself decides who to help and who to leave to his own devices. This affects the final result.
Modern graphics, colorful cut-scenes, a lot of historical events and the opportunity to look at the birth of Great Britain have done their job - there are plenty of fans at Thrones of Britannia right now. Given that the developers did not conduct any PR campaign, this is a worthy result, indicating the right choice of themes and genre. Yes, and the new series “Vikings” will soon be released, similar events are taking place there, which also spurred the fans.
- the future of Great Britain is in our hands;
- reliable story;
- strategy for fans of the genre;
- fascinating plot and cut scenes;
May not like:
- strategies are not for everyone.
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia arrives April 19 on PC.
God of War (2018) (PS4)
There is no special need for the presentation of God of War (2018)
- this is one of the most striking exclusives on the PlayStation 4 this year. Already at the time of the announcement and the first trailer of the project, it became clear that Sony gave the developers the installation not only to surprise the fans of the franchise, but directly to hurt them lively. And, there is a feeling that the creators of the new part everything turned out even better than everyone expected.
Since 2018, God of War in parentheses is a restart of the series and a sequel at the same time. There is so much new here that you don’t even know where to start. The main character, the god of war, is a little old, although he has plenty of strength. Events transfer us from the familiar Greece to Scandinavia, which entailed a radically new visual image - snow, forests, completely new opponents and myths. In addition, the usual slasher turned into a real drama!
Yes, the protagonist now has a wife, has a growing son, and the relationships of these characters are conveyed very mentally and touchingly. The son does not obey his father, making Kratos nervous, his wife gives out strong educational speeches. Oh yes, our god of war now deals with enemies without his beloved blades, now he has an ax in his hands, sometimes he uses a shield, and he also learned to shoot from a bow. In the setting of Scandinavia, the ax looks more organically, and the updated combat system will slightly refresh the franchise.
- restarting the series;
- radically new location;
- new enemies and myths;
- interesting drama and plot;
- ax, bow, helper son.

Frostpunk (PC, Mac)
The Frostpunk project is created by independent developers from the studio 11 bit studios. They took the bar too high, which caused two major project transfers - first from 2017 to 2018, then from the first quarter to the second. However, now developers are one hundred percent sure that no one will release the release from April 24th. Most importantly, despite the “indie” game, it looks very solidly.
The plot tells us about an alternative world where the inhabitants of the Earth of the XIX century are trying to survive in the conditions of eternal winter. A similar world has already been described in books, films ("Through the Snow" - a great movie), and games of other genres. In Frostpunk we are allowed to play the urban planning simulator, only the atmosphere here is completely different, which is why the sensations from passing through are also fundamentally different from most other products. Game mechanics promise to surprise, and in places even shock.
You are building the last city on Earth, the stronghold of mankind, and success must be achieved by any means. You can brutally crush the smallest uprising, you can use the labor of children, upgrade steam engines, punish criminals and make important decisions in the development of mankind. Each of your decisions will influence the further development of events, some of them will be irreversible. The project in the form of a crude workpiece was shown at E3 2017, and critics directly strewed flattering reviews. I think an ordinary gamer will also like it.
- the fate of mankind depends on you;
- a lot of interesting and new mechanics;
- cool storyline;
- atmosphere of the end of the world;
- actions affect the future.
May not like:
- no controller support;
- wild system requirements (Core i7 and GTX 1060 for high);
- $ 30 for an indie is too expensive.
Frostpunk launches April 24th on PC and Mac.
Ashen (PC, Xbox One)
The young studio Aurora44 was able to surprise visitors at E3 2017 with its grandiose project Ashen. Against the background of AAA games, which already looked like services for pumping money out of a gamer, this novelty looked quite interesting, stylish and atmospheric. The developers have invested a lot of energy and imagination in their product, plus it is exclusive to the Xbox One and PC, which users and game critics could not miss.
The plot is based on a well-established story in literature and cinema about life in harsh reality - the planet no longer receives sunlight due to the eruption of volcanoes. The mass of dust in the air prevents the rays from breaking through to plants and all living things, which entailed the extinction of mankind, the mutation of monsters and the appearance of all kinds of undead. All this will prevent our protagonist from surviving, and yet he also needs to find a new home for humanity.
Thanks to an interesting plot and realistic apocalypse, the virtual world seems more attractive. We will be allowed on our way to meet all sorts of allies and decide which of them we will take to ourselves, feed and comfort, and who can be ignored. We add here a huge variety of monsters of various types and sizes, a dark gray world, and we get a chic oppressive atmosphere. And, of course, I want to know what will be there at the end of the game - can the hero find a new habitat or not?
- done with the soul;
- a world without light and heat;
- darkness of monsters;
- addictive survival gameplay;
- we ourselves decide who to take to the "tree house".
May not like:
- rather sad setting;
- monsters sometimes scare with their dimensions.
Ashen launches April 30 on PC and Xbox One.
The BattleTech project is created by Harebrained Schemes, which developed and released the latest parts of Shadowrun. Given the number of positive reviews about the studio’s games, plus the colorful trailers of the new product, one can expect something very cool and exciting about the Mech battle. We are promised a good storyline and the developers say that they plan to find a balance between battles and secondary game mechanics.
For example, here you will need to hire new characters piloting your robots, they will have their own stories, characteristics and features. The virtual world will please with tactical capabilities - this is not a banal rocket fire. You can use the landscape to gain an advantage over the enemy, hide behind mountains and rocks, jump, get away from the enemy’s attack, and go into his back. Tactics play an important role and it will be very difficult to win due to a banal advantage in the characteristics.
In its desire to make the best game in the genre, the studio did not calculate its strength a bit and had to postpone the release to April 2018. Fans were not disappointed, as the audience of the product consists of experienced gamers who can wait a bit to get a quality game. Plus, the genre of tactical battles itself attracts more adult audiences, for whom the next transfer is not a moral trauma.
- story line;
- you can use the landscape for strategy;
- tactics are more important than frontal attacks;
- a large set of options for "technology".
May not like:
- role-playing action with turn-based battles.
BattleTech launches PC in April.
Deployment (PC, Mac)
Indie project Deployment is a multiplayer shooter with a top view. Many, including me, drew attention to this game only because the developer had previously created We Are The Dwarves. The game about gnomes in space turned out to be a chic project for many evenings, so the pixel shooter has also become very popular and is being discussed on the net. The author of this article even managed to play Deployment a bit before the official release, and he liked it.
The graphics are very bright and juicy, but do not put pressure on the eyes, even if you play in the dark for several hours in a row. The shootings turned out to be very saturated, and although everything is in pixels, the visual component of the project for a solid four with a plus looks. You fight with other players in the arenas, kill each other, use a lot of different weapons and classes of fighters. Plus, you can get an advantage due to the terrain, if you are a tactician and know how to cheat.
In general, Deployment is suitable for evening games with friends or alone. The product, as expected, does not require much power from your PC, you can gladly punish enemies with your pixel machine, even on the integrated graphics. A certain part of the audience of gamers enjoys such pixel-based indie shooters, only for the sake of which the game has been added. True, he played and really liked it, although not a fan of pixels at all.
- multiplayer shooter from indie studio;
- beautiful picture;
- very active shooter;
- different classes of warriors and weapons.
May not like:
- indie game for which they want money.
Deployment is released in April on PC and Mac.
