Archos packs its tablets in boxes with a flap valve and a detailed listing of the main technical characteristics. Archos 70 Platinum has a rectangular box, while Archos 70b Helium has a square box, but they are similar in color and content.
Both tablets are sold complete with thick multilingual instructions, which seem like a waste of paper, since they do not contain anything useful to a user who is more or less familiar with Android OS.
The package contains a micro-USB cable and an adapter for charging from the network. We will tell about complete adapters separately. Since Archos delivers its products worldwide, the boxes contain unusual modular chargers.
The Archos 70 Platinum has a small adapter (5V, 1.5A) that connects to three common socket standards with two nozzles. Small and comfortable, travel lovers would appreciate it.
For some reason, the Archos 70b Helium is equipped with another model of a universal charger (5V, 2A), more bulky and with the help of nozzles capable of connecting to only two socket standards.
At first glance, the tablets are similar - a white frame, the manufacturer’s logo in its lower part, a silver metal back, plastic buttons on the right side of the case. Headphone and charging jacks are on top. None of the tablets have any light / proximity sensors. The cases of both devices are well assembled and tactilely pleasant.
The differences are in the details. The easiest way to distinguish Archos Helium from Platinum is by the characteristic slot of the earpiece above the screen and by two wide plastic inserts on the back of the device. Under the top removable insert, the Archos 70b Helium hides a dual SIM slot and a 64-gigabyte SD card slot. Archos 70 Platinum cannot boast of support for cellular networks, so the only slot designed for an SD card (up to 64 GB) is located in the slot on the left of the case.
Transport films are glued on both tablets, and Archos 70 Platinum has a second under the first - a protective film. These coatings are characterized by low transparency, greatly distort the image, so for clarity, they had to be removed.
On paper, the characteristics of the TFT IPS matrices are identical. The diagonal is 7 inches and the resolution is 1024x600. Already by the ratio of the diagonal and resolution it becomes clear that you should not count on an amazing picture. But the Archos 70 Platinum screen is amazing. Unpleasant. With the strongest color distortions that turn black to blue at the slightest deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular, one could still put up with it, but in 2016, not a single user would definitely want to see “watermarks” on the tablet screen (see illustrations below). We hope that this is a marriage in a particular device, because there is no better way to come up with a better excuse.
The Archos 70b Helium does not have such problems and due to this it looks more profitable, but the low pixel density per inch and the frankly small maximum brightness of the eyes are not encouraging. There is no oleophobic coating on the screens.
The specifications of both tablets are typical for entry-level devices.
Archos 70b Helium has a quad-core Mediatek MT8735M processor with a maximum frequency of 1 GHz and a Mali 720 MP1 graphics core, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of permanent memory.
Archos 70 Platinum is also equipped with a Mediatek processor, but in a different series. MT8127 with four cores, having a frequency of 1.3 GHz, is paired with a graphics accelerator Mali-450 MP4, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of permanent memory. Both tablets have an accelerometer.
Comparison of the results of synthetic tests does not allow to identify a clear leader in performance. Archos 70b Helium has a faster central processor, internal and RAM, but its graphics core is inferior in speed to the Mali-450 MP4 installed in the Archos 70 Platinum. At the same time, the operating system definitely works more responsive on the Archos 70b Helium.
Archos 70b Helium runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop, Archos 70 Platinum has a slightly older version of the operating system - Android 5.0.1 Lollipop. There is no significant difference in user experience between the two, however, in the Helium system there are more changes made by the manufacturer.
These are sound enhancement technologies, Miravision display calibration technology, application blocking function that prevents them from being accidentally minimized, as well as the built-in Archos Fusion Storage utility that allows you to combine internal memory with an SD card into a single array. The latter is very useful, since 8 GB is not enough to install applications.
According to the communication capabilities of the tested tablets vary. Archos 70 Platinum has support for Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth, GPS / AGPS. In the case of Archos 70b Helium, fourth-generation network support is added to this list, implemented using two SIM card slots and one radio module. Thanks to him, with the help of Archos 70b you can make calls.
As for navigation, the speed of interfacing with satellites of the Archos 70b Helium is much higher, and the number of satellites involved is greater.
The capacity of the Archos 70b Helium battery is 2800 mAh, a check showed that the battery capacity is as stated. It took 2 hours 20 minutes to fully charge the tablet from the bundled adapter. In the Trashbox autonomy test, traditionally performed at 50% brightness in the Chrome browser, the Archos 70b Helium lasted 6 hours 42 minutes.
The capacity of the Archos 70 Platinum battery is 200 mAh lower and 2600 mAh; in practice, it also corresponds to the declared one. It takes 2 hours 50 minutes to fully charge this tablet from the bundled adapter. Battery life is 6 hours 28 minutes.
According to the manufacturer, both tablets have a 3 MP main camera and 0.3 MP front camera. The reality is somewhat at odds with the list of features presented on the manufacturer’s official website.
Using the main camera Archos 70b Helium, you can take pictures with a resolution of 1600x1200 and record video 1920x1088. The front camera of this tablet is limited to 720x480.
But at Archos 70 Platinum both photographic modules are the same and can take photos with a resolution of 1600x1200 and record video in a resolution of 1920x1088. Here are some examples. Odd photos - Archos 70b Helium, even photos - Archos 70 Platinum. The shooting conditions are the same.
Needless to say, such cameras are not suitable for artistic photography. They are applicable only for utilitarian purposes, such as photographing text or photographing some incident.
Archos 70b Helium and Archos 70 Platinum are typical representatives of their price category - tablets worth "about 5000 rubles." Such devices do not have top-end characteristics, but they find their customers coping with the basic tasks, no matter what, they find.
A close comparison of the two Archos tablets showed that if gaming performance is not your only priority, it is better to give preference to the Archos 70b Helium. This tablet is more responsive to commands faster, and also supports fourth-generation cellular networks. Its most significant drawback, taking into account positioning, is the small amount of internal memory that makes the use of an SD card almost mandatory.
Archos 70 Platinum despite the faster graphics chip, a larger amount of internal memory and, as it turned out, a higher resolution front camera, we did not like. This is due to poorer software settings, low memory speed and delays in the operation of the interface, but mainly in a low-quality screen.
Final rating: 6 out of 10.
