OnePlus has finally unveiled the 7T Pro, which we have been waiting for so much, but the update turned out to be rather small compared to the 7 Pro, which was released this spring. Yes, the processor is a bit more powerful, charging a little faster, the new macro mode - no more changes. Apparently, therefore, the company decided to attract the attention of users with another version of this smartphone, made in an unusual thematic design.
Many people know that OnePlus periodically releases customized versions of its flagships for a narrow circle of fans. For example, in 2017, in collaboration with Disney, they showed the OnePlus 5T with a Star Wars-inspired design, followed by the OnePlus 6 in the Avengers style. Now, the company officially introduced the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition - a smartphone whose appearance resembles cars from the British brand of the same name. By the way, OnePlus 6 also exists in this form.
The device will be sold worldwide, and, like last year, you will receive 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. The novelty will cost about $ 980, and its sales will begin on November 5.
Like last year, the 7T Pro McLaren Edition received a distinctive orange (the manufacturer calls this color Papaya Orange) strip at the bottom of the back. By the way, the logos of both brands are also located at the rear. The front camera is hidden in a pull-out module at the top of the smartphone, making it look pretty frameless.
In addition, the texture of the back panel resembles a tree, flooded with glass. It looks very unusual and makes the smartphone recognizable, but not all users will like it. OnePlus states that this design was designed with reference to the materials that McLaren uses in their cars. Customization also affected software - users will receive a new design theme, made in the same black and orange colors. By the way, the orange elements in the design are connected with the McLaren racing line. From 1968 to 1971, the most iconic models of their cars featured bright fiery inserts.
If you want to find the car that is most similar to this smartphone from OnePlus, then this is definitely the 2005 McLaren MP4-20. The model, made in a similar black and orange design, was really a cult at the time, and also won 10 of the 19 races in which it participated.
Despite the rather extraordinary design, the smartphone looks like the manufacturer was too shy to make it too bright. Many journalists agree that to make it simply bright orange would be a much more interesting step, and the picture on the back panel, as mentioned above, will not appeal to everyone. OnePlus obviously did not use the full potential of McLaren design, and this fact is quite disappointing. The same OnePlus 5T Star Wars, made in white with red themed elements, looks much more stylish next to its heir.
One of the features of the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition was the pre-installed McLaren AR application and a special booklet with photos, pointing the smartphone at which users could watch videos telling the brand's 50-year history. As an additional feature for fans, it looked very personal, but there is nothing like that in the new product of this year.
Like every OnePlus exclusive device, the 7T Pro McLaren Edition received a special case, and this time it received Alcantara and carbon fiber trim, as well as the McLaren brand logo.
If you already know the characteristics of the usual 7T Pro, you can safely scroll through this section, because the customized version is no different from the amount of RAM (12 GB instead of 8 GB).
The phone is equipped with the same Snapdragon 855+ processor, the same 6.55-inch QHD + AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 90 Hz and the same UFS 3.0 storage. As for the battery, it is in a 4080 mAh device. And, as with the 7T Pro, with the McLaren Edition you get Android 10 right out of the box.
Of course, the fact that OnePlus is working with McLaren is very interesting. However, the fruit of their joint work does not meet expectations at all, not differing from the original in almost nothing.
After all, what exclusive do you get with the 7T Pro McLaren Edition? A slightly brighter design, 12 GB of RAM and the logo of a famous brand on the back. Here, in fact, there is nothing that users could pay attention to, and certainly nothing for which it would be worth paying such a pretty impressive amount.
If you are a loyal fan of McLaren, perhaps this device will really interest you, but with the same success you can purchase the standard version of 7T Pro and a thematic case for it.
Pros of OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition:
- Interesting design;
- 12 GB of RAM;
- The logo of a famous brand on the case.
Cons of OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition:
- Not the most pleasant price;
- Lazy use of the McLaren brand;
- Leaving camera [author's supplement].
